Can empathy go out of fashion? Or is it an eternal human trait that makes us care for each other, to the benefit of all? Is empathy a valuable ability or a dated weakness? When listening to some of todays influential voices, one start to wonder. In a world where survival of the fittest seem to have a upswing, empathy is put into a shinkring space. Or at least some try to do that, it sadly seems. Raw power over cooperation. Dominion more than compassion. Conquer and dominate rather than give, share and cooperate.
The thing is: it is not possible to build a good community anywhere on this planet without empathy. Not a lasting a flourishing community that embraces safety and equal human rights. Denying or diminishing the need for empathy and the expressions connected to it leads inevitably to repression and destruction. Empathy needs space and freedom. It is something to take care of and protect.
No matter time, culture, religious orientation or political system we all share some basically human needs. This is profound. Empathy is the ability to understand someone else on an emotional level, thus being able to help, care for or comfort. Out of empathy growths love. It bonds people together, forming families, groups and in the extension society itself. It can therefore never become outdated and it will always endure.
